What is a “Nature Journal”?

“Nature journal” can be used interchangeably with terms like “field notes”, “nature diary”, “log book”. These journals have proven to be vital for both professional and personal spheres of life. Notable people in history who kept journals were Beatrix Potter, Leonardo da Vinci, Lewis Caroll, Marie Curie, Ludwig van Beethoven & Thomas Edison. A modern day nature journal is similar and has nature as its main subject.

For me, nature journalling combines my loves of nature, science, home, travel, architecture, history, writing, drawing, learning, awe, curiosity, details, reflection and one of my favourites: memory-keeping.

Nature journalling & creativity also connects well with my training in counselling, expressive arts therapies & youth work and is a useful activity for maintaining mental, physical & emotional health. I have seen many participants gain skills in observation and creativity, but also in confidence, relaxation, enjoyment and gratitude.

I have never met anyone who regretted filling a page or two of their journal. The barriers are almost always time, motivation and confidence.

Melbourne Nature Journal Club

The Melbourne Nature Journal Club meets during one weekend each month on a Friday and Saturday - your choice of one or both.

It is a great chance to meet like-minded people, to visit local treasures, and to begin or continue your own journal habit. The purpose of the group is to provide community, sharing + support.

In warmer months we meet outdoors. In cooler, wetter months we meet at locations that have undercover areas, cafes or we meet online. The listed event will specify.

To register for events, visit the Workshops page.
